Where to get Clay and how much does it cost

Must be summer as I have had lots of people asking me questions on the clay oven. The number one question is where did you get your clay from, as I am having trouble sourcing it. The second question is how much did you use? So here are the answers:

My original plan was to get the clay from a local building site, but I wanted to feel confident that the clay would not crack after several burns. So I decided to buy my clay, and I went for the classic red clay. I managed to get this from my children’s school. It was delivered to the school and I just went and picked it up.

There is a good chance that you do not have the same contacts, but you might be able to buy it direct from them. Here is their website, and just search for clay:

I paid around £4.50 a bag and used around 7 bags. Some people recommend using crank clay, but I went for plain red clay and then worked lots of sharp sand into it. I am glad I went with this option, as when I dismantled the oven, the
inner clay core was in perfect condition. Checkout my video below:

Also note that this is kiln clay and not air dry clay. I hope that answers all the questions, but if not let me know.

I was contacted by John who got his clay from the following company, they even sell a pizza oven mix. Saying that, his first oven cracked so he soaked it and mixed in a lot of sand, and now things are looking good.
